  • A total of 84 personnel are involved in cellular pathology, which includes mortuary staff, from assistant healthcare scientists to consultant pathologists. From administrative support and clerical personnel to consultant biomedical scientists who report alongside the consultants, The management of the quality of service offered is based on the diversity of personnel within the discipline, with the primary objective of prioritizing the patient.
  • The mortuary service is appropriately HTA accredited, and the cellular pathology service is UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 standards.
  • The Senior BMS Laboratory Lead will be a critical element of the team responsible for ensuring the efficient flow of workflow through the primary histopathology laboratory. The laboratory’s goal is to enhance its efficiency in both quality management and time management, as well as comply with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • The position is intended to reduce the time between tissue dissection and the issuance of diagnostic specimens to reporting staff, thereby maximizing the time available to pathologists to meet the turn-around-time expectations set forth by the Royal College of Pathologists.
  • The laboratory lead will possess the necessary skills and capabilities to advocate for effective and high-quality training strategies in all departments of the department.   • To achieve a high level of quality in the embedding, sectioning, cutting, and staining of routine, cutaneous, and biopsy specimens.
  • Assist in the establishment and preservation of clinical pathology accreditation and good laboratory practice.
  • Responsible for the evaluation and adherence to standard operating procedures.
  • The Heads of Service are satisfied with the adequate quality assurance achieved, both internally and externally (e.g., NEQAS).
  • Responsible for the ongoing professional development of healthcare scientists and support grades, as well as the maintenance of up-to-date training records, in the field of cellular pathology.
  • Guarantee that all equipment is adequately maintained and that current maintenance records are accessible.
  • In conjunction with the Chief BMS, conduct performance reviews and appraisals of staff as directed by the Head BMS.

  • Engage in educational programs for the medical, nursing, and scientific personnel of the Trust, as well as for students attending colleges and universities. This may necessitate labor beyond the typical working hours.

  • Minimize waste and promote efficient and common stocks of products within the directorate by ensuring optimal usage of consumables, reagents, and other items.

  • Substitute for the SBMS chief in immunohistochemistry as directed by the Chief BMS.
